The ABQ BioPark has opened its newest garden, Lebanon and Beyond, offering visitors an experience that connects the Mediterranean and the American Southwest. The garden features a blend of Lebanese and New Mexican landscapes, highlighting both cultural and ecological ties between the two regions.

The project was made possible through funding from Robert and Monika Ghattas, who have been part of Albuquerque’s business community for over 70 years, along with support from the New Mexico BioPark Society (NMBPS).

According to NMBPS Executive Director Julie Miller Rugg, “The Ghattas family’s generosity, combined with the support of our members and donors, has made Lebanon and Beyond possible. This garden is a shining example of how philanthropy helps us create extraordinary spaces that connect people with nature and celebrate our community’s cultural heritage.”

Lebanon and Beyond includes Mediterranean plants such as fig trees and Lebanon cedars alongside native New Mexican species like Yucca rostrata. The design also incorporates Lebanese-inspired architecture integrated with desert landscapes. Visitors can access sensory areas and gathering spaces such as a conservatory and terrace intended for education, small events, and reflection.
