New Mexico is taking a stance against potential immigration enforcement actions by the incoming Trump administration. House Speaker Javier Martínez has made it clear that the state will not cooperate with any plans targeting undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S.

At a gathering held at the Roundhouse, Martínez joined representatives from five immigrants’ rights organizations to introduce nine proposals aimed at safeguarding immigrants within New Mexico. Among these measures is a proposal to prevent state resources from being utilized in support of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed mass-deportation efforts. Additionally, it seeks to prohibit both state and local governments from entering into contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement for detaining immigrants.

“I’m not an ally. I’m not a champion. I’m one of you,” stated Martínez, who identifies as a second-generation American, addressing the group of immigrants and their advocates present at the event.
