Peter Wirth, Majority Floor Leader | Senate Democrats
Members of the New Mexico Senate Democratic Caucus convened to select their leadership for the upcoming 57th Legislature. The caucus nominated Senator Mimi Stewart from Albuquerque as their candidate for Senate President Pro Tempore. This election will be finalized in January when the full senate gathers.
Senator Stewart expressed her gratitude, stating, "I am honored to have the support of our diverse new Democratic Caucus for President Pro Tempore as we enter what will undoubtedly be a tough but productive session." She added her confidence in bipartisan cooperation to serve New Mexicans effectively.
Senator Peter Wirth from Santa Fe was re-elected by acclamation as the Democratic Majority Leader, a position he has held since 2017 after being first elected to the Senate in 2008. "It is humbling to be re-elected Majority Leader once again by my colleagues," said Senator Wirth. He emphasized his excitement about collaborating with new members and working alongside the House and Governor on state challenges.
The caucus also re-elected Senator Michael Padilla from Albuquerque as Senate Majority Whip. Senator Padilla thanked his colleagues, saying, "I would like to thank the Senate Democratic Caucus for having the continued confidence in me to do this job." He committed to working tirelessly with all caucus members.
Additionally, Senator Leo Jaramillo from Española was elected as Majority Caucus Chair. He stated, "It is an honor to have been elected by my colleagues to serve as Caucus Chair," expressing enthusiasm about contributing positively across New Mexico communities.
The 57th Legislative Session is set to begin on January 21, 2025. During this 60-day session, there are no limitations on bill subjects that can be introduced.
