There is a palpable sense of unease following the recent presidential election, particularly within the queer and trans community. The outcome has led to concerns about the future under another Trump administration. For many, it feels like a step back in terms of government support for LGBTQ rights.
In New Mexico, however, there remains a strong commitment to affirming and securing these rights. "It will take some time to process and settle into this shift in power," said Equality New Mexico (EQNM). Despite federal challenges, EQNM emphasizes the importance of protecting local communities.
On a positive note, several Equality Champions are set to return to Santa Fe's Roundhouse. They will be joined by new allies advocating for LGBTQ communities. Additionally, Sarah McBride's election as the first openly transgender person in U.S. Congress brings hope and joy.
The local LGBTQ community is not alone in its efforts. Organizations such as the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, ACLU, Bold Futures New Mexico, and Strong Families stand in solidarity with EQNM.
"Regardless of who is in power," EQNM states that their focus remains on maintaining protections during Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s remaining term. Efforts include envisioning public safety laws through humane approaches and expanding access to abortion and gender-affirming care.
Founded in 1993, Equality New Mexico has long recognized systemic discrimination at both cultural and policy levels. "New Mexican values are affirmation, acceptance, and love," they assert—a sentiment reflected in their ongoing legislative efforts since passing non-discrimination laws in 2003.
The election results may alter strategies but not goals: "liberation for queer and trans New Mexicans." These objectives are supported by thousands across the state working collaboratively toward housing security, healthcare access, economic stability, safety in all spaces—and most importantly—community connection.
As EQNM prepares to advocate federally post-election 2024 while leading by example locally: "For years," they remind us that New Mexico has been a beacon for those seeking inclusive environments amidst hostility elsewhere—a role they intend fiercely maintain moving forward despite electoral outcomes nationwide.
