The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced the release of a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for public comment. This assessment pertains to the proposed lease sale of wind energy areas off the coast of Oregon. The draft EA evaluates potential environmental impacts associated with site characterization and assessment activities, such as geophysical, geotechnical, archaeological, and biological surveys.
According to BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein, "This is an important step in advancing our efforts to harness the vast renewable energy potential offshore Oregon." The release of this draft marks progress in understanding how offshore wind development could affect local ecosystems and communities.
The draft EA also considers mitigation measures that could reduce or eliminate adverse effects on marine life and habitats. Public comments are being solicited by BOEM to ensure comprehensive analysis and community input before finalizing decisions related to these leasing activities.
"We encourage stakeholders, including Tribes, industry representatives, non-governmental organizations, and members of the public to review this document," said Klein. Feedback will be considered in shaping the final version of the EA.
The comment period for this draft EA will remain open until December 12th. Comments can be submitted through regulations.gov under docket number BOEM-2024-0001.
