Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a statement on Sunday in response to the passing of John Kinsel Sr., a distinguished Navajo Code Talker and Marine. She emphasized his service and the impact he had during World War II.

“John Kinsel’s service as a Marine and Navajo Code Talker represented the values and valor that helped the U.S., and its allies prevail in World War II," Gov. Lujan Grisham stated. "His legacy is one of extraordinary courage and profound patriotism, not only as a warrior but as a protector of his Navajo heritage."

The governor called upon New Mexicans and Americans to reflect on Kinsel's contributions. “I invite my fellow New Mexicans and Americans to join me in reflecting on Mr. Kinsel’s bravery and sacrifice in honor of his service to America and the Navajo Nation."

She extended her condolences, saying, "Manny and I extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Kinsel’s family and loved ones during this difficult time."

In addition, Gov. Lujan Grisham highlighted the significance of the Navajo Code Talkers Museum, which is still under development. "As we honor Mr. Kinsel’s life and contributions, it is also an opportunity to recognize the importance of the Navajo Code Talkers Museum," she noted.

This museum aims to preserve stories like that of John Kinsel for future generations, ensuring their historical roles are understood.
