LGBTQ advocates condemn use of trans issues in election campaigns

The LGBTQ community has expressed concern over being used as a tool to influence voters during the 2024 election season. This issue is highlighted by Equality New Mexico (EQNM), which criticizes conservative strategies that portray trans people negatively to drive voter turnout.

Marshall Martinez, Executive Director of Equality New Mexico, stated, "These lies are infuriating, but more importantly, they hurt us and they scare our communities." He described these tactics as "the worst kind of electoral tricks," emphasizing the need to resist fear-based campaigns.

In response to these tactics, EQNM advises against engaging with misinformation. Instead, they recommend making informed statements supporting trans rights without acknowledging false claims directly. The organization provides resources and training for allies to handle such situations effectively.

EQNM highlights the value of acceptance in New Mexico, noting that families should decide on healthcare matters rather than the government. They stress the importance of providing resources and education for parents when their children come out as transgender.

A recent study commissioned by EQNM found that 65% of New Mexicans believe in fostering acceptance for trans individuals. This sentiment is echoed by state leaders like New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martinez, who emphasizes uncompromising support for dignity and humanity.

As elections become increasingly polarized, EQNM warns against deceptive practices aimed at inciting violence and hatred. Marshall Martinez remarked on the worsening attacks on LGBTQ people: "They aren’t only lying to win your vote. They’re lying to inspire violence and hatred, too."
