New Mexico Historic Sites has announced the Los Luceros Harvest Festival event at the Los Luceros Historic Site.
On September 22, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Los Luceros Historic Site will host its annual apple-picking event. According to the event webpage provided by New Mexico Historic Sites, visitors can pick apples using provided tools, enjoy fresh cider from Pajarito Environmental Education Center, and participate in various activities including performances, children's games, wool dyeing demonstrations, and a variety of food trucks and craft vendors.
The event will feature exhibits such as the Cultures and Creators display with local Native and Hispano artists, artist demonstrations, and book readings. Attendees can also explore the Wonders on Wheels mobile museum, visit the Los Alamos National Laboratory trailers, and engage with regional organizations like Amigos Bravos. Performances include music and dance, and there will be opportunities to tour historic buildings, meet animals, and visit a blood drive. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with free entry for certain groups.
Los Luceros Historic Site is a scenic 148-acre ranch located north of Alcalde along the Río Grande. The site features a historic Territorial-style Hacienda as its main attraction. It also includes an 18th-century Capilla (chapel), a Victorian cottage, a carriage house, a guesthouse, and a farmyard reflecting over six centuries of history.
New Mexico Historic Sites is part of the Department of Cultural Affairs and overseen by the Museum of New Mexico Board of Regents. Established in 1931 to preserve the state’s scientific resources, the system includes eight active sites such as Coronado and Fort Stanton. Others like Pecos and Gran Quivira have been transferred to the National Park Service. Five sites have remained inactive due to various reasons including Folsom and Paako.
