The NMSU Fire Department emphasizes the importance of safety in public buildings on campus and elsewhere. It is crucial to know your way out in case of an emergency or during a fire drill. Here are some tips to keep in mind before entering public buildings, including restaurants and theaters.
As you enter, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the environment. Locate exits immediately and assess which ones are closer or farther away. Main exits may become overcrowded due to panic, so identifying alternative exits is also important. Ensure that the exits you recognize have clear pathways and are not obstructed by furniture, boxes, or other objects. Report any obstructions immediately.
Know what is outside the exit doors, such as a parking lot or open area, so you can reach transportation and evacuate safely. Always have a communication plan for your group and pick a meeting place where everyone can gather and account for each person. Once safe, contact 911.
NMSU’s Fire Department conducts unannounced fire drills throughout the year to help students, faculty, staff, and visitors learn how to behave in an emergency. Although these drills may be inconvenient at times, they are essential for preparedness.
During a fire drill:
- Stop whatever you are doing and calmly proceed to the nearest exit.
- Do not run or panic; panic may cause injuries.
- Do not gather personal belongings; take your keys and cell phone only.
- Meet outside at a pre-designated location and account for everyone.
- Close doors on your way out to prevent the spread of smoke and fire.
- If unable to exit, call 911 with details of your emergency and location.
- Do not re-enter the building until it is declared safe by the fire department.
False alarms should never be assumed as such until confirmed by responding firefighters. Malicious false alarms can lead to complacency among people who stop appropriately responding to alarms, delay emergency responders from attending real emergencies, cause injuries during evacuation, and inconvenience everyone until safety is assured.
The NMSU Fire Department urges everyone to be aware of their surroundings in public places. The Emergency Planning Committee encourages departments to update their Emergency Action Plan regularly.
