Las Cruces Financial Services Department honored with GFOA's Excellence award

The city of Las Cruces declared that its Financial Services Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual comprehensive financial report by The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. This certificate is considered the highest accolade in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The achievement marks the 19th consecutive year Las Cruces has been recognized, demonstrating its commitment to rigorous financial transparency and standards.

The city of Las Cruces recently released its financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, which then underwent impartial evaluation and met the highest standards of the program. The financial report, crafted by the Accounting and Treasury programs, adheres to the City Charter Section 5.09 and the principles outlined by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), ensuring compliance with rigorous financial reporting standards.This marks the city's 19th consecutive year of achieving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (ACFR) awards, according to a press release by the city of Las Cruces.

Speaking on this feat, Comptroller Josie Treviño expressed gratitude towards her team. "The preparation of the ACFR could not have been accomplished without the efficient and dedicated service of a highly qualified staff in the Financial Services Department," said Josie Treviño, Comptroller of the Financial Services Department, according to a press release by the city of Las Cruces. "I would like to thank all personnel who helped and contributed to the preparation of this report."

Established in 1906, The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) serves as a representative body for over 20,000 public finance officials across the United States and Canada. These members, hailing from federal, state/provincial, and local levels, actively engage in the planning, financing, and execution of numerous governmental operations within their respective jurisdictions, according to the GFOA website.

The GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program is not a recent initiative. In 1945, the GFOA introduced the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (COA) with the aim of motivating and supporting state and local governments to surpass the basic standards of generally accepted accounting principles, according to the COA website provided by the GFOA.
