German company mtex Antenna Technology is set to establish a facility in Albuquerque to meet the needs of its North American clients, including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA. mtex specializes in the production of telescopes for astronomy and geodesy, along with advanced antennas for specialized applications, according to a press release by the NM Economic Development Department (EDD).

"Wiesbaden-based mtex hosted a delegation from New Mexico to announce the expansion on Sept. 28 at its facility in Leipzig," the press release announced.

According to the press release, mtex intends to invest $16 million in an Albuquerque facility located at the Sandia Science and Technology Park. This investment will go towards the creation of a 70,000-square-foot space, equipped with their proprietary manufacturing technology for high-performance AI panels, featuring a state-of-the-art machining center. The facility is projected to employ 62 individuals and commence operations in 2027, with an estimated economic impact of $182 million over the course of a decade.

“New Mexico is the optimal location for the company in terms of workforce, education, livability, business operating costs, and logistical transportation connections to U.S. customers,” said mtex Antenna Technology CEO Lutz Stenvers, according to the press release. “We are bringing investments in technology, engineering, and machining to Albuquerque, we feel that it's the place to be right now as we look forward to possible collaborations with University of New Mexico, engineering schools such as New Mexico Tech, and other high-tech companies.”

mtex has secured a contract to enhance the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) by developing and installing as many as five antennas at various global sites. This expansion effort aims to interconnect the technology, enabling the capture of more precise images and advancing our comprehension of black holes. During the expansion planning process in New Mexico, mtex received support from the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (AREA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting economic development in the region, according to the press release.
