Los Alamos National Laboratory has announced its 2023 Fellows, including Tariq Aslam, Rod Borup, William Daughton, Tess Lavezzi Light, Filip Ronning, Richard Van de Water, Hari Viswanathan, Ivan Vitev, and Scott Watson. Being appointed as a Fellow at Los Alamos represents a recognition of accomplishments in the fields of science and engineering, encompassing a wide spectrum of achievements spanning from fundamental research to practical mission-oriented endeavors according to a press release.

According to the laboratory, the selection of Fellows is based on three criteria. The first criterion is sustained, high-level achievement and/or leadership in advancing science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) or its application. The second criterion is one or more STEM discoveries, inventions, or breakthrough applications that have made significant advances to a field of discipline, bringing widespread acceptance and recognition. The third criterion is becoming a recognized authority in a field or discipline as evidenced by citations, awards, fellowships in prestigious societies, and/or engagement at the national/international level because of their expertise.

Tariq Aslam, affiliated with the Physics and Chemistry of Materials group, has established himself as a global authority in the field of high-explosives-detonation modeling and algorithm development. Rod Borup, a member of the Materials Synthesis and Integrated Devices group, has garnered international acclaim for his exceptional scientific contributions and leadership, particularly in the domain of fuel-cell technologies. William Daughton, a valuable contributor to the Primary Physics group, has made pivotal contributions to the realm of theoretical plasma physics according to a press release.

“These researchers have made significant contributions to their respective fields, and it is an honor to recognize them as Laboratory Fellows,” said Laboratory Director Thom Mason according to a press release. “I congratulate them on the outstanding work they have done throughout their careers and thank them for playing pivotal roles in our mission and in the global scientific community.”

Tess Lavezzi Light, from the Electromagnetic Sciences & Cognitive Space Applications group, is a recognized national leader in electromagnetic pulse science's application to nuclear detonation detection. Filip Ronning, part of the National Security Education Center, is an international authority in condensed matter physics. Richard Van de Water, in the Applied and Fundamental Physics group, excels in particle physics. Hari Viswanathan, of the Energy and Natural Resources Security group, is an international fluid dynamics expert. Ivan Vitev, in the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology group, leads in quark-gluon plasma and quantum chromodynamics. Scott Watson is renowned for his expertise in gas-cavity hydrotesting according to a press release.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows program recognizes the exceptional contributions and expertise of these researchers and their impact on the scientific community. Their work spans a range of disciplines and showcases their dedication to advancing science and engineering.
