HSD acting cabinet secretary Armijo: “988 is available to help you”

The 988 crisis line celebrated its first anniversary in New Mexico on Wednesday according to an article published by the NM Human Services Department on the same date. The line acts as a 24/7 lifeline for emotional, mental, and substance abuse issues and offers free round-the-clock call, text, and chat access to trained crisis counselors. The line caters to those who are dealing with suicidal thoughts, mental health crises, substance abuse concerns, and general emotional distress, and also provides support to those concerned about a loved one’s wellbeing. Additionally, 988 now offers Spanish text and chat services and utilizes Language Line Solutions to provide translation services in over 240 additional languages. Later in 2023, 988 is expected to add video phone services to assist deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

“We understand people don’t always self-identify being in a crisis, but they often sense when they need help,” said HSD acting cabinet secretary Kari Armijo. “We don’t want anyone to ask themselves is this serious. If you or someone you know are having a bad day, call, text or chat 988 and talk about it. 988 is available to help you.”

Since its launch in July 2022 through May 31, the 988 crisis line in New Mexico has responded to 21,702 total connections. The line is believed to have saved the lives of over 4,732 people dealing with suicidal ideation. The state currently has an 81% average answer rate and has seen a significant reduction in response times, going from 1:01 minutes to 26 seconds. Comparatively, the national average response time is 37 seconds. 88% percent of calls, texts, and chats were effectively responded to in the first contact by trained local behavioral health experts capable of providing community mental health and substance use support.
