Hurricane’s Café in Albuquerque's Nob Hill section is repairing its roof after it was heavily damaged by the intense winds that recently ravaged New Mexico.
The restaurant was one of the many businesses, buildings and residences affected by winds that left a trail of destruction. Thousands throughout the Albuquerque metro area were left without power due to the winds that reached up to 75 m.p.h.
“The wind was howling and we heard a loud crash above the kitchen,” Bill Mascarenas, owner of Hurricane’s Café, told KRQE. “Everybody started running out frantic. I came up to check the roof and another big gust came and another big chunk came flying. So when I went back inside and I just saw that the roof basically just peeled off with some of the wind.”
There was damage all over the city. The construction site of the new Chick-fil-A near Coors and Rio Bravo also was damaged when a trailer flipped on its side. An apartment complex had its carports blown off, and a tree fell on a woman’s car during services at the Rio Grande Baptist Church.
The PNM website reported that, at one point, 43,000 customers were without power.
First responders spent the entire day trying to answer calls.
“That is definitely a much higher trend on a daily basis than we’d typically see,” Lt. Robert Arguelles, with Bernalillo County Fire Department, told KRQE.
