Bernalillo County is establishling an automated speed enforcement program similar to the program in Albuquerque, which uses speed cameras.

The Bernalillo County Commission unanimously approved the ordinance with a 5-0 vote to make roadways less dangerous.

“Excessive speeding has become a real problem throughout the county and we hope this automated speed enforcement program will help to bring down those high-speed occurrences,” commissioner Walt Benson told KOAT. “With the county and the city both tackling this problem, we can begin to make our streets and roads safer.”

Under the ordinance, law enforcement must review evidence of alleged speed violations before a fine is issued.
