A Corrales resident is looking to open a small assisted living facility in her home but is already getting backlash from potential neighbors.

Huan Hill, who is with Loving Hands Supportive Living, enjoys helping people in need and plans to open her home to three people as an assisted living facility.

“I believe the Department of Health realizes we do need some assisted living homes,” Hill told KRQE. “We just don’t have that many facilities to take them. People can live longer in assisted living with people looking after them.”

Some nearby neighbors told KRQE they are concerned about increased traffic, sanitary issues, and a loss of property value. Hill said neighbors shouldn't be concerned because her residents wouldn't require the kind of medical care needed in a nursing home. Loving Hands Supportive Living is an in-home supportive care agency that needs more assisted living homes.

“I hope this community realizes it and everybody has an open heart to do something for those people who need our help,” Hill said.

Hill has applied for zoning approval. Her application for a “Home Occupation Permit,” falls under “Agricultural and Rural Residential” in the village code, according to KRQE.  A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Nov. 16. The public is invited to comment.

Village of Corrales Planning and Zoning told KRQE that in the last five years, there has only been one other “Group Home” application within a residential area. It was denied because of the number of people the company wanted to house.
