Amazon’s new transportation hub, “Amazon Air,” began operations last week at the Sunport, the primary international airport serving the state of New Mexico.

Amazon leased a 30,000-square-foot cargo facility on 5 acres, southwest of the terminal next to FedEx and UPS, according to KRQE News.

“We take great pride in officially welcoming the world’s largest retailer to the Sunport,” Albuquerque Aviation Director Richard McCurley said during a press conference to commemorate the opening. “Amazon’s transportation hub is a tremendous addition to our cargo operations and a sign of continued growth. We look forward to partnering with them for many years to come.”

Under the terms of the lease agreement, Amazon will utilize the Sunport facility for 10 years with the option to extend the agreement five years at a time, for up to 25 years.

Mayor Tim Keller, a proponent of the partnership with Amazon, said the company’s presence is a tremendous asset for the city, and additional options are being explored to strengthen the partnership between Albuquerque and Amazon.
