Lorna Greenway is grateful to the volunteers of the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue who located her after she was lost for nearly 16 hours in the foothills last week.
“I’m extremely thankful for those guys,” Greenway told KRQE News.
An avid hiker, who just moved to the area less than two months ago, Greenway began her hike at the bottom of the Indian School Trailhead around noon and eventually got very lost in her unfamiliar surroundings. She called her husband for help as the sun started to set and the battery on her phone drained.
“I waited and I waited, and I started getting really cold,” Greenway told KRQE News.
Eventually, she spotted a drone flying in the darkness. Shortly after that, members of the Albuquerque Mountain Rescue Council arrived. It was 4:30 a.m. by then.
“I kept calling and kept calling and eventually, they got close enough to say, ‘Lorna is that you?’ and I said yes,” Greenway said, according to KRQE News.
Albuquerque Mountain Rescue issued a statement reminding hikers to be extra careful, especially during this time of year. Greenway is a seasoned hiker, who enjoys exploring new trails.
“It’s new territory, it’s a new challenge,” she told KRQE News.
She vowed to be more cautious during her upcoming hikes.
“I have heard stories about other people being rescued,” she said, according to KRQE News. “I thought, ‘Eh, it will never happen to me because I’m too careful and... it happened.”
