Rep. Block: Why does Sen. Sharer want 'to raise taxes 20% on alcohol?'

John Block, a House Representative from New Mexico, said that the Senate GOP leadership mirrors the Governor's policies on daycare, taxes, and impeachment. He questioned the alignment within the party in a statement made on X.

"Why is the NM Senate “GOP Leader” someone who MLG shares his viewpoints on socialist “free” (taxpayer-funded) daycare, who doesn't want to impeach MLG and attacks those who do, and then wants to RAISE TAXES 20% on alcohol," said Block, New Mexico State Representative for 51st District (R). "Share your thoughts on NM Sen. Bill Sharer of Farmington!"

Recent reporting by AP News indicates that New Mexico’s GOP has faced internal disputes over Senate leadership. This is particularly concerning cooperation with Governor Lujan Grisham’s policies. Some party members have called for more distinct conservative positions, while others have urged bipartisan compromise following Minority Leader Greg Baca’s departure.

According to the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee, a 2023 proposal to raise the state alcohol excise tax by $0.25 per drink was projected to generate $187 million annually. It was expected to reduce alcohol consumption by nearly 10% and prevent over 300 violent acts and 52 deaths, providing measurable economic and public health benefits.

As reported by KOAT, efforts to impeach Governor Lujan Grisham intensified in late 2023 when GOP Representatives John Block and Stefani Lord filed impeachment resolutions. However, House Republican leadership distanced itself from these efforts, characterizing them as political stunts and not advancing them to formal votes.

Block is a Republican New Mexico House Representative for District 51, first elected in 2022. According to his Wikipedia entry, he previously founded the conservative news outlet Piñon Post and worked as a legislative staffer and campaign communications director.
