A retired firefighter is using social media to show the public what local firefighters encounter on a nightly basis.
Eric Knight, a retired Albuquerque firefighter, posts the activities of firefighters on “afdfirewire” on Instagram. Knight retired from the fire department last year and is still part of the Albuquerque Retirees Association. He continues to chronicle what the life of a firefighter is like.
Knight estimates that AFR has responded to approximately 110,000 calls this year.
“Wildfires are a big thing here now, hazardous material calls, medical calls, the old fallen and I can’t get up thing,” he told KOB 4 recently. “We pick up grandmas and grandpas in the middle of the night pretty frequently.”
Knight was advised early in his career to document his activities.
“They’re really tiny videos just to give you a glimpse at what it’s like to be so close to a fire, or to almost be in it,” he said. “Just like anything else it’s part of history, the firefighters, and it’s part of what we do.”
Knight noted that his social media account is simply intended to “show that your fire department is out there and they’re busy and they’re working hard.”
Other fire departments have contacted Knight for his social media expertise.
“Other fire departments will reach out to me and ask for tactics of what we do in certain scenarios, unions have reached out to us asking what our staffing is or how our trucks are designed,” he said.
