People attending the 50th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9 can access the event more easily, thanks to a new on-ramp for Interstate 25 South.
The on-ramp is the result of a $2.5 million project, according to KOAT. Construction started in late July and was completed earlier this month, as well as another $2.2 million in improvements to Balloon Fiesta Park. These improvements include a new northeast lot with 500 parking spaces and a new park-and-ride bus depot.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) said she hopes the project will allow more people to enjoy the annual fiesta that attracts people from all over the world, KOAT reported.
"This means that the Balloon Fiesta is going to be a more memorable experience for everyone," Lujan Grisham said. "Let's make sure we keep investing in the places where it really makes a difference."
Patrick Montoya, director of the Department of Municipal Development, said drivers heading to the fiesta will appreciate the improvements, according to KOAT.
"We are so happy to have completed this project on time and on budget,” Montoya said. “The new ramp should greatly improve the experience exiting the park for all of this year's Balloon Fiesta attendees."
The first Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta occurred in 1972, the fiesta website noted. The Balloon Fiesta hosts hundreds of thousands of guests each year. Balloon Fiesta Park, located north of Alameda Boulevard, has been the site of the event since 1996. It is considered the largest balloon event in the world.
