On Sept. 18, students from Dexter High School hosted a car wash and bake sale to raise funds for the families of Justus Sanders and Wyatt Garner.

Sanders, a senior, was killed in a tragic car crash Friday night, Sept. 16. Garner, the driver of the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized. Both are Dexter High School football players.

Students hosted the fundraisers at the Dexter firehouse where friends, family and members of the community gathered to show support after learning of the tragedy. Dexter Fire and Rescue Chief Justin Powell said the students raised more than $10,000.

“Look at the amount of kids here, look at the amount of support, like I said this is pretty amazing to watch this." Powell told KRQE

A candlelight vigil was also held Sunday night. Powell noted that the school is still struggling with the news of the tragedy along with the rest of the small, quiet community located just south of Roswell. The school has made crisis personnel available for students.

Sanders' funeral is scheduled for Wednesday. The District administrators have elected to close school on that day so students and teachers can attend.

"We hope that you understand that most of our students grew up with Justus since he started school here in Dexter, our staff also watched him over all these years, and they need the time to grieve over the loss of him," James Salas, president of the Dexter Consolidated Schools Board of Education, said in a statement posted on the Dexter Schools' Facebook page.
