The closure of two recycling drop-off sites is leaving fewer options for people to deposit glass.
The drop-off recycling site on Juan Tabo near Candelaria will close on Sept 2. A second location set for closure next Friday is located downtown under the Marquette overpass, according to KRQE. That site only collects glass.
After the two closures, there will be 10 drop-off sites around Albuquerque. The city told KRQE it has no current plans to add more.
“This I know is a very popular place because of the glass recycling and that is very important to helping the community stay cleaner,” Dr. Fredda Rosenberg told KRQE.
Recycling glass is always a bit of a challenge, forcing avid recyclers to travel several miles to a drop-off facility. “I’m not familiar with a bunch of other recycling locations around Albuquerque,” Sheryl McGartland told KRQE. “The glass for me is a big one because the rest of our stuff we are normally able to get into our blue bin. But the glass we are not able to get into at all.”
One resident is concerned the closing of the facilities will lead to more trash in the streets. “It’s raised concerns to what may lie ahead,” Mathew Henderson told KRQE. “I’m concerned about the trash that will end up around the city.”
