The San Juan County fair is underway, continuing more than 100-year-old traditions, including the famed outhouse race enjoyed by both seniors and youngsters.

“Our outhouse has wheels, and we will have one person inside the outhouse and there will be certain parts of the obstacle course that each person will do as one person is in there the rest of the people will be pushing,” fair Queen attendant Sariah Chapman told KOB before the race, which she was trying to win for the third straight year.

“Royalty has been winning all past three years,” Chapman said. “I hope we win tonight.”

The county fair signals the arrival of fall and features different food, plenty of lemonade and animals.

“I am just having fun and I want to see the animals and everything," Jonah Ledesma told KOB. "I just don’t really get to see animals like pigs where I live.”

While there are many competitive events, Preston Haedon, 18, said it’s not always about the competition. Haeden has entered the pig competition for the last 10 years.

“Teaches you a lot of life skills," he said. "I’ve been doing it for almost 10 years now, I went from showing goats to showing pigs." He thinks he might have a winner this year.

“I am hoping with him, I do good,” he told KOB. “He’s a good pig. I haven’t won anything since I have been showing. I made a sale once or twice. It’s very competitive.”

The San Juan County Fair concludes on Saturday.
