The Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex is paying off in terms of the revenue — and college and pro scouts — coming into the city when it hosts tournaments.

The stadium is providing extra opportunities for fans and pro scouts to watch some high-level competition. In turn, developing athletes are getting a chance to showcase their talents during tournament play.

“You know the Lobos are here, we have colleges from Texas,” Ron Murphy, a coach and tournament adviser for the city of Rio Rancho, told KRQE in a recent report about the Texas Premier 16U Tournament that the complex recently hosted. “They are here from Illinois, they are here from Kansas, Colorado; we got college coaches all over the place. It gives our New Mexico kids a chance to get looked at here.”

The stadium has been open just a few years, but it is already earning a reputation for hosting high-caliber competitions.

Mayor Tim Keller was on hand for the recent competition, throwing out the first pitch before one on the games and touting the city’s decision to have built the stadium.

“So, what I also hear from families a lot is, ‘Why do we have to travel to these different tournaments elsewhere, why can’t we have them in Albuquerque?’” Keller said in explaining the city’s choice to build the complex. “We are, and this is it.”
