The Albuquerque BioPark is committed to informing the public about the dangers that come with plastic use. Throughout July, the BioPark will participate in a global movement called Plastic Free Ecochallenge to encourage members of the community to reduce their use of plastic.

“It can be something as simple as not getting a straw at a restaurant,” Deborah Cook, education coordinator at the BioPark, told KRQE.

The hazards of plastic and its negative impact on the environment have been well-documented. The PlasticFree Ecochallenge, according to the website, is a “31-day global challenge to reduce and refuse single-use plastics.”  It was created by Ecochallenge.org, an Australian initiative that partnered with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium “to help you discover, learn, and explore new ways to take care of wildlife and the world we all share,” according to the website.

The BioPark views the challenge as a great way to raise awareness about the problems caused by plastic. It joins teams throughout the world participating in the challenge to inspire people to take eco-friendly actions. According to KRQE, team members can input their daily eco-friendly actions into the website and earn points for their team.  Click here for the ABQ BioPark site.
