The prop master for the Alec Baldwin movie “Rust” recently spoke with Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigators about the shooting on the movie set that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
ABC 7 reported that not only did multiple misfires happen prior to the shooting, several live rounds were also found on the set after it occurred.
"I went over to the cart because I had a suspicion of what happened, um and or, not what happened, but like you know to see if there were any other live rounds in the box that she pulled from," prop master Sarah Zachary told ABC 7. "I started shaking the rounds and I found a few more in it."
The incident took place in October when a gun that was in Baldwin's hand fired while on the set, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has maintained his innocence of any wrongdoing and has said publicly that he never pulled the trigger.
Zachary told investigators that she heard the shot go off and “heard Joel scream,” the ABC report said. She then saw set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who said the situation “wasn’t supposed to happen” and her “whole career is ruined.”
Zachary told the investigators at the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department that there were two misfires on the set, the ABC report said. One was while Zachary was re-loading a gun and the other was when a stunt double accidentally discharged a Henry rifle while alone inside his cabin. Zachary said no one was hurt in those instances, adding in her case that she had the gun pointed at the ground without a projectile.
One key piece of information revealed was that safety bulletins were never posted on the set and there were hardly any safety meetings, the ABC report said. Zachary noted that the meetings happened “one or twice,” and they were mainly just about what guns were being used.
To date, no criminal charges have been filed in the shooting.
