Fire officials in Bernalillo County are concerned about illegal fireworks being a fire danger during the Fourth of July weekend and the days surrounding it.
Recent monsoon rains brought some much-needed moisture to the area, but the potential for a fire to spark in the drying forests shouldn’t be taken for granted.
"We didn't have rain for almost five months, and then we got a bunch of rain,” Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya told KOAT Action News. “It's great, but we need to stay diligent and not (let) our guard down. If we get a few dry days in a row, all that moisture content in fire fuel could dry up.”
Bernalillo County Fire Marshal Mark McConnell said that the most concerning things are bottle rockets and Roman candles.
“Those kinds of things are going to shoot up high in the air, above 6 feet,” he told KOAT Action News. “Once they go up in the air, we don't know where they're going to come down and land."
McConnell said Bernalillo County fire officials spend most of their workdays looking through firework tents to make sure only legal fireworks are sold.
“What we can do in Bernalillo County is sell legal fireworks that are safe for the community to enjoy in safe spaces,” McConnell said, according to KOAT Action News.
He advised the community to be diligent about contacting law enforcement or calling 911 if anyone sees a fire.
"Let the professionals light the fireworks and just sit back and enjoy them with your families," Moya told KOAT Action News.
