A man suspected of shooting and killing a woman in front of their young daughter was captured after a high-speed chase that started in New Mexico and ended in Arizona.
Zion Gibson, 26, was arrested by Arizona law enforcement officials for allegedly shooting and killing Rosa Trujillo, 25, at her home in Lovington in late May, according to KOB 4. Trujillo was on the phone with 911 when Gibson forced his way into the residence and the two began arguing.
“You [expletive] scare me," Trujillo said to Gibson when he initially showed up, according to the 911 dispatcher. “I’m not answering the door.”
The dispatcher then heard glass breaking and Trujillo telling Gibson, “Zion! You just broke my [expletive] window. I’m already on the [expletive] phone with the cops.”
Eventually, Trujillo screamed, “He has a gun!” into the phone.
The dispatcher reported hearing six gunshots, a pause, and five more shots, KOB 4 reported. That was followed by the sound of a car loudly driving away.
“The couple’s three-and-half-year-old baby girl, their daughter, was in very close proximity and in the same room as the victim,” David Miranda, Lovington police chief, told KOB 4.
Miranda said Gibson called Trujillo’s parents during his escape to tell them to check on their granddaughter “because he had just killed her mother,” KOB 4 reported. Lovington police notified authorities in Arizona that Gibson was heading their way.
“[State Police] intercepted him on I-40 westbound, just west of Albuquerque, I believe around Gallup,” Miranda told KOB 4. “It was a high-speed pursuit into the state of Arizona and Arizona DPS was notified and they took over the pursuit in the state of Arizona.”
The chase ended near Holbrook, Arizona, where Gibson crashed his vehicle and engaged in a brief standoff with law enforcement officials before surrendering, according to KOB 4. He was transported to Apache County Jail in Arizona, then extradited back to New Mexico. He will face charges of first-degree murder, child abuse, and burglary in New Mexico.
