Thanks to Albuquerque’s new speed cameras, more than 2,000 warnings for speeding were issued in less than a month.

The city installed speed cameras in three locations and those cameras have issued warnings to 2,192 drivers, according to KOB 4.

The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) started giving out $100 citations instead of warnings on Wednesday.

“The numbers show that more than ever, we need this force multiplier to crack down on speeding on our streets,” Nick Wheeler with APD’s Motor Unit said recently. “We need a change in behavior, and we’re using Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) combined with our ongoing strategic traffic operations to get us there.”

The city plans to install several more cameras over the next few months, with a goal of installing as many as 10 across the city, KOB 4 reported. So far, the cameras have captured 32 vehicles going 60 mph or faster in a 40-mph zone, while 21% of drivers were found to be driving 11 mph or more over the speed limit.

APD officials hope the cameras will prevent drivers from speeding in the absence of a police vehicle.
