Police in Albuquerque reviewed footage from body cameras and surveillance video from a Cabela’s store.

The footage showed a New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officer in the middle of a theft attempt that ended in gunfire.

Gabriel Velasquez was driven to the store by a friend in late April, according to KOB 4. He attempted to steal ammunition with the intention of reselling it to fix his damaged car. Caught in the act, Velasquez pulled a gun and pointed it at employees.

Cabela’s employee Ashley Ortiz witnessed the shooting.

"I start hearing gunshots just going off – boom boom boom boom boom," Ortiz told KOB 4. "And so, I get down and I’m like, 'Oh my gosh, these are gunshots.'"

Then, Robert Archuleta, an off-duty NMSP officer, stepped in. That scene was captured on store security video as well as Archuleta's body camera.

Velasquez got off at least one shot and Archuleta fired shots at the suspect, KOB 4 reported. Velasquez was injured and left behind by the friend who had been driving; the scene was captured on security video.

Velasquez and the driver, identified as Joseph Montoya, both face several charges and are currently in jail, according to KOB 4.
