Angel Fire Resort pushed back its summer opening day by one week due to fires that continue to threaten the area.

"We are delaying the opening of our summer season til May 27 or until we get more info about the current fire situation," resort officials said on Twitter. "We are grateful for the fire crews and first responders that are protecting our community. Our goal is to assist them and to keep members and guests safe. More soon."

Fire officials are focusing on the north end of the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire. The fire has burned nearly 300,000 acres and is only 27% contained, according to KOB 4.

Much of the surrounding areas south of Angel Fire have been evacuated to protect the town and its residents.

The local economy relies heavily on tourism.

"We've had a lot of calls asking about whether we are open," Steve Larson, a local brewery owner, told KOB 4. He said that many tourists left when evacuation notices were issued. Many people are worried that the encroaching fire will reach the town limits.

Much of Larson's staff opted to evacuate the area as well.

Fire officials told KOB 4 they are trying to be proactive in containing the blaze as it slowly moves toward inhabited areas. Calmer winds in recent days have helped the situation.

Nearly 2,000 firefighters are battling the fires that began in April. The Hermits Peak fire started from a prescribed burn that became out of control, KOB 4 reported. The cause of the Calf Canyon fire is under investigation.
