Two suspects who were involved in an alleged street racing incident appeared in court in Albuquerque on Monday (May 9) after being apprehended by police.
The incident occurred last weekend during a routine patrol by Bernalillo County deputies, who recorded a video of cars doing donuts at the intersection of University and Indian School, according to KOB 4. Law enforcement was then able to arrest two individuals who attempted to flee the scene.
“It looks like the allegations were that Ms. Pena was the passenger in a vehicle that fled a traffic stop, and she's charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated fleeing. I did not see anything in the criminal complaint that I think could responsibly be considered evidence of a conspiracy,” said the attorney, according to KOB 4.
Thanks to a helicopter that followed the two suspects back to their apartment, deputies were able to track them down and arrest the alleged driver, Nicholas Mahmoudi, and a female passenger, Odalys Pena. Mahmoudi will be held in jail until trial without bond, while Pena will be "on pretrial services supervision," according to KOB 4.
This is only the latest in a string of street racing incidents for Albuquerque, a crime that is being taken more and more seriously in the wake of this latest arrest. The department announced that it plans to hold everyone involved in the incident responsible, including drivers, passengers and spectators.
