'It's a poor county': Aid coming for low-income residents on the run from wildfires

Hundreds of people are fleeing Mora County, as a wildfire there has burned many homes.

The Calf Canyon Hermits Peak fire is at risk of expanding northward, according to KOB 4. This puts the hundreds of residents in Mora County and their homes at risk of being overtaken by the flames.

The fire has already destroyed numerous homes in the area. It could theoretically spread into neighborhoods where there are hundreds of houses, so those homes have been evacuated.

"Many people have lived there for centuries," County Commissioner Frank Maestas told KOB 4. "We're talking very modest homes – small ranches, farms. A few are large, and a few are expensive, but as a whole, it's a poor county.”

Officials said that funding and aid are necessary to assist the people of Mora County. Many of the residents are poor and cannot afford to pay for a hotel or food while they flee the fire, leaving their homes and jobs, KOB 4 reported.

The state has sent some aid to those impacted by the fire; officials are attempting to locate areas where residents can stay and rest while on the run.

Maestas estimated that 200 to 300 homes are already at risk from the fire, but some estimates exceed those numbers, according to KOB 4.
