An Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) bus flipped on its side in late February when a street racer collided with its back wheel, sending several children to the hospital, KOB 4 reported.
The unidentified driver of the George Sanchez Collaborative Community School bus said in a recently released video that there was nothing he could do. He told police that the two vehicles headed toward his bus were racing, according to KOB 4's coverage of the video of the crash, which was released in late April.
"There were two, a white car and the Mustang that's there, all damaged," the bus driver told police in the video. "They were speeding on each lane. And the guy didn't have anywhere to go – so when I was across, this guy was beating him so he just went straight into me."
The bus driver was traveling northbound on Messina Drive SW, crossing Gibson Boulevard SW, just after 5 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to a Feb. 24 Albuquerque Police Department (APD) statement. The racing drivers were in blue and white Ford Mustangs.
"The force of the crash caused the school bus to roll onto the driver's side," the statement said. "A witness did tell officers the blue Mustang continued westbound on Gibson Boulevard and did not stop."
The video graphicly shows screaming children tossed around the bus as it was flipped. Seven of the 23 students inside the bus suffered serious injuries to their legs, including one child who required surgery for a fractured pelvis, according to the APD statement.
Mario Perez, the 49-year-old driver of the white Mustang, also ended up in the hospital following the crash. He reportedly was taken into custody and charged with great bodily harm by vehicle, the APD statement said.
KOB 4 reported that prosecutors tried to keep Perez in jail, but the alleged street racer was released in April after promising a judge he would not drive while his case is pending.
Police apparently are still looking for the driver of the other Mustang.
