A local grocery store hosted a cookout in April for Ruidoso residents who were left without power due to wildfires, KOB 4 reported.
"A lot of people haven't had heat, haven't had the ability to cook it, so what better place to do it than here," Dylan Oden, store director for Albertsons in Ruidoso, said. "So, we're gonna do that as we're out of power; we'll just be right there."
Many residents struggled without power as a result of the recent wildfires in New Mexico. Hundreds of residents evacuated their homes and sought shelter away from the blazes.
A state of emergency was declared for the village of Ruidoso and power was turned off for safety reasons, KOB 4 reported. In response, people at the local Albertsons store set up grills and cooked food for anyone who needed a meal while seeking shelter from the wildfires.
The store has not been immune to power outages; it lost power and as a result, many frozen products were destroyed. In order to avoid a complete loss of the food, the store chose to provide meals to locals.
