Sophomore slugger Jeffrey David hit a bases-clearing double to drive in three runs in the top of the ninth inning to give the University of New Mexico a 7-4 victory over New Mexico State on April 5 at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces.

It was the second-straight victory of the season for the Lobos over the inter-state rival Aggies. UNM beat NMSU 19-2 on March 29 in Albuquerque. New Mexico’s overall record improved to 13-16, while New Mexico State fell to 11-15 on the season.

According to the Lobos website, David was the Lobos’ hitter throughout the game, collecting five RBI, a double and a triple. His double came in the top of the ninth inning after the Lobos had loaded the bases with no outs in a 4-4 game. Chase Weissenborn, a freshman from Albuquerque, singled to lead off the inning. Kamron Willman, a senior, doubled to put runners at second and third before Sean Stephens was hit by a pitch. David doubled to right field to send all three runners home for the margin of victory.

Senior right-hander Aaron Makil (1-1) earned his first win of the season, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings of the game, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

In addition to David, the Lobos received solid contributions from Kyle Landers and Lenny Junior Ashby. Landers extended his hitting streak to 13 games with two doubles against the Aggies. Ashby went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored, while belting his eighth home run of the season.

Sophomore right-hander Terrell Hudson started the game and worked a career-high four innings, while striking out two. Sophomore right-hander Brian McBroom took over from Hudson and worked 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Owen Loesch, a sophomore left-hander, who pitched into the eighth until Makil entered.

The Lobos head to Fresno, Calif., for a three-game conference series against Fresno State starting April 8-10.
