A veteran residing in Rio Rancho is facing fines from his local homeowners association (HOA) over the issue of flying two flags on his property.
According to KRQE News, the HOA is fining resident Michael Duty for flying two flags in his yard because residents are technically only allowed to have one.
Duty says that a new HOA management company came to run the neighborhood and told him to take down his flag or face a fine even though he's been flying two flags for nearly five years.
The veteran claims the flags were not an issue until he ran for a board seat and got elected in February. After being elected, he started receiving fines and was shut out of emails from the board and information about meetings. This leads him to believe that he is being pushed out of the board.
“They sent me a violation and told me I had to take the flag down, my guess is they were trying to intimidate me and get me to not run for the board,” Duty told KRQE News.
According to Duty, he flies an American flag and a Marine Corps flag. He says that he is being fined $100 by the Blue Door Realty management company that will double every 30 days if he doesn't take the flags down.
Duty says that he has no intention to take down any of the flags and that he plans to take the HOA company to small claims court if he continues to receive fines.
