The first meeting in the annual Rio Grande Rivalry wasn’t much of a game on Tuesday night at Presley Askew Field, as the University of New Mexico unleashed years of frustration as the Lobos run-ruled New Mexico State in seven innings.

The 19-2 final broke a six-game losing streak to the Aggies and was the Lobos' first win against New Mexico State since March 2017.

Matt Haley received plenty of support in working a career-high six innings. He allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out a career eight eighth NMSU batters.  Owen Loesch took care of the seventh innings, mixing a strikeout among two groundouts.

The offensive explosion was contagious as all 14 Lobo batters reached base at least once. Seven New Mexico players had multi-hit games. Cole Posey enjoyed a productive day, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Posey had a double, and a three-run home run in the second inning that staked the Lobos to a 4-0 lead. Kyle Landers was a busy 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. All three of Landers’ hits were doubles.

The Lobos blew open the game with six runs in the third inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Most of the damage was done with two outs after Chase Weissenborn was hit by a pitch. Johnny (Shane) Podsednik then followed with an inside-the-park home run that ignited the rally.
