The New Mexico Rail Runner is looking into new security measures, following a series of stabbings that occurred last week during an afternoon train ride.
On Saturday, 33-year-old Luis Sanchez was arrested by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) after allegedly stabbing three people during a train ride, according to KRQE. Two of the victims were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition.
"We’ve had 15 million passengers and 16 years of service and never had an incident like this," Augusta Meyers, communications manager for Rail Runner, said to KRQE. "Our security guards are not armed; our security guard who responded to this situation on Saturday did the exact right thing.”
Following the incident, Rail Runner announced its intent to employ nine new security guards who will not be armed, citing the lack of situations that would require the use of weapons for defense, according to KRQE. The system will rely on new security cameras for added defense, while the guards will patrol the parking lots and train cars.
Non-violent incidents such as car break-ins previously occurred in station parking lots, but this was the first incident to occur on the train. Rail Runner staff have not ruled out the potential for having armed guards on the train but will continue to investigate all options, KRQE reported.
