An unknown assailant reportedly continues to vandalize property in an Albuquerque neighborhood, keeping concerned residents on edge, according to a March 11 KQRE report.

Donovan Roberts reported having his security camera stolen by the vandal in October, and this month the same man returned to shatter Roberts’ new security light, according to KRQE. A video showed the man using a bungee cord with a hook to break the light.

“I know it’s happened across the street from me, and some other people have mentioned it’s happened other places here in the neighborhood,” Roberts told KRQE.

Roberts added he suspects the man might be homeless and in need of mental help due to his behavior such as standing and staring at the camera or light for a long time.

The Albuquerque Community Safety Department was recently created to deal with incidents involving mental health issues. Director Mariella Ruiz Angel told KRQE the agency sends trained responders with a background in mental health and social services on calls that do not require a badge or a gun.  The group reportedly responded to 600 calls in February, more than half involving homeless people.

“We’re just there to help,” Ruiz Angel told KRQE. “We’re there to check on them.”

The community group, according to its website, responds to calls 7 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week.
