A survival kit Diane Brown made before going hiking with her dog in the Bisti Wilderness may have saved her life.

Brown became lost after a day of hiking on Feb. 27 in the Bisti Wilderness, located in the Four Corners region, according to KRQE. She used the items in her survival kit to build a fire to keep herself and her dog, Annie, warm through the night.

As it started to get dark and her cell phone battery was about to die, Brown texted her location to her husband and friends. Early the next morning, the Crownpoint Police Department contacted the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and an aviation team began looking for Brown.

It took about an hour to locate the lost hiker, who had worked her way to higher ground and was waving a piece of her clothing in the air when she was located.

“I could not find my way out of here… I did draw little X’s all over the places where I’ve been.” Brown said to KRQE.

Despite enduring a night of extreme cold, Brown had no injuries.

“I’m doing great,” she said. “I’m extremely cold because I spent the night out here.”
