A chase for a man suspected of robbing a Subway sandwich shop ended when he was discovered trying to hide under a pile of clothes inside a home, according to KRQE.

Jeremy Lopez, 26, was taken into custody last week by the Española Police Department. He was accused of robbing a Subway restaurant on N. Riverside Drive near Fairview Lane.

A store employee said a man wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and a red bandana on his face entered the store around 6:20 p.m. He pulled a gun and demanded money from the register, saying, “Give me everything in the register or you’re going to (expletive) die, right now!,” KRQE said.

The store clerk complied and the suspect grabbed an undetermined amount of cash and sped off in a four-door, dark-colored Mazda. The vehicle was later identified through video surveillance as belonging to Lopez’s mother. The car was later discovered in front of a mobile home near the edge of Santa Fe County near Cuartelez, according to KRQE. That’s when the standoff began.

Law enforcement officers began making calls to the home. After about 13 minutes, Tamara Torres, 26, came out of the house with her arms raised and was taken into custody. According to KRQE, Torres told deputies that she was Lopez’s girlfriend and she didn’t know where he was. Torres claimed Lopez was not in the house, according to the complaint. Officers continued to make calls to the home for about 45 minutes. Sheriff's deputies then entered the home with permission from the homeowner, KRQE said. Lopez was found hiding under a pile of clothes.

Lopez was charged with armed robbery and attempting to commit a felony, while Torres was charged with resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer and trespassing.
