Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA), a technology solutions company with a research and manufacturing center in Randolph, Vermont, has announced a new partnership with the University of Vermont (UVM) to address the issue of microplastics in waterways.

The collaboration aims to explore whether microscopic robots, or microbots, can be used to remove microplastics from water. Microplastics are small plastic particles that have become prevalent in Vermont's waterways. These pollutants pose risks not only to aquatic life and ecosystems but also potentially impact human health by affecting cardiovascular and digestive systems.

ARA has previously developed microbots for use in less invasive medical procedures and targeted drug delivery. The company now plans to adapt this nanotechnology for environmental applications, specifically targeting the challenge of removing microplastics.

"Now we are teaming up with UVM to tackle microplastics," said an ARA representative.

The partnership marks a step toward using advanced robotics research for both environmental protection and public health initiatives.
