Albuquerque falls prey to stabbing spree

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

What started as a call for one stabbing on Feb. 13 ended up keeping Albuquerque Police busy, as they ultimately identified 11 victims.

“They appear to be random; someone was involved with an accident here on Central. A person just came up and said they were stabbed,” Gilbert Gallegos of the Albuquerque Police Department said to KRQE. “There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason at this point.”

The victims were all attacked in the downtown area. Police discovered seven separate scenes where the various victims were attacked, the KRQE report said. While some of the injured were quickly released from the hospital, others sustained critical wounds, though at last report even the most severely injured were in stable condition, KRQE said.

After scouting out the area and talking with witnesses, police determined that the suspect was carrying a large knife while riding a BMX bike. Police later tracked down the suspect and arrested him.

The man, identified as Tobias Gutierrez, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, police told KRQE.
