Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico (PPVNM) has endorsed Deb Haaland in her campaign for governor of New Mexico. The organization cited Haaland’s personal experience with reproductive healthcare, noting that she relied on Medicaid and Planned Parenthood services during college and pregnancy.
Adrienne Mansanares, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund, stated, “Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico is proud to endorse Secretary Deb Haaland for governor. Her steadfast commitment to reproductive and sexual health care access is backed by a decades-long track record of support for Planned Parenthood, our patients, and the communities we serve. She understands that true freedom means having the power to make decisions about our bodies and our lives with dignity and care.” Mansanares added, “As a former patient, a U.S. Congresswoman, and the first Indigenous person appointed to a Cabinet-level position, Secretary Haaland holds a deep understanding of both the diverse needs of our patients and the compassion and heart our providers bring to their care. At a time when federal attacks on health care are escalating, Secretary Haaland is the trusted leader New Mexico needs to safeguard our future.”
Haaland’s campaign comes at a time when national debates over reproductive rights continue. She has pledged to protect affordable healthcare options in New Mexico if elected governor. In her own words: “When I was younger, I would not have received the care that I needed if it were not for Planned Parenthood. The providers at Planned Parenthood were with me every step of the way and I will fight fiercely to protect the work they do,” said Deb Haaland. “I won’t stand by and let Trump and Republicans take healthcare away from New Mexicans. I’m running for governor to protect New Mexico’s health and partner with organizations in our community that are providing affordable options.”
During her tenure in Congress, Haaland supported several legislative efforts related to reproductive health. She co-sponsored measures such as the MOMS Act aimed at improving maternal health services as well as legislation establishing statutory rights around abortion care.
Haaland has also engaged directly with healthcare professionals across New Mexico during her campaign. She outlined plans at a press conference to defend rural hospitals facing funding cuts and emphasized protecting coverage for tens of thousands of residents who could be affected by proposed reductions in federal healthcare spending.
The endorsement from PPVNM marks another step in building support among groups focused on expanding access to healthcare throughout New Mexico.
