Security footage showed a woman attacking an Albuquerque mosque by setting multiple fires at the Islamic Center of New Mexico last week.
This attack comes after Albuquerque reported increasing cases of hate crimes.
“It’s troubling to see the nationwide trend of an uptick in hate crimes,” APD Public Information Officer Gilbert Gallegos said in an emailed statement to KRQE. “In Albuquerque, the community took a stand and elected Mayor Keller to send a message that there is no room for hatred in our city. Our leadership at the Mayor’s office and at APD is committed to inclusion, equality and diversity and follows procedures to report hate crimes to the FBI for investigation.”
The center is the oldest and the largest of its kind in the state.
“I was very shaken up,” Dr. Kader Abdelerahman, vice president for the center, said to KRQE. “I was heartbroken that somebody with very evil intentions would do this to such a peaceful and loving community.”
Surveillance video shows a woman setting multiple fires around 9 a.m. The fires were put out very quickly by men who saw the flames and jumped in to put them out and help.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said mosque members believe the same suspect may have tried setting another fire at their center a few weeks ago, KRQE reported.
