'People could actually go out and see things': Albuquerque's La Mirada Shopping Center to become homes, retail

A longtime Albuquerque eyesore could soon make way for new homes and businesses.

After its demolition, plans call for the La Mirada Shopping Center off Montgomery and Wyoming Blvds. to be revitalized into a hybrid residential and commercial area.

“It would be nice to see businesses come back instead of just ordering online,” Charlie Aldrich, who brought his wife, Donna, and grandchildren to the demolition, told KRQE. “It could be somewhere where people could actually go out and see things and see each other.”

Plans submitted to the city call for more than 60 homes on the western half of the plot of roughly 15 acres, and eight spots for businesses along the main streets. The only question seems to be how soon the changes could be coming to an area that already sees more than 37,000 vehicles per day.

To separate the new neighborhood from commercial spaces, developers said they plan to add a retaining wall along the homes.
