Hundreds of New Mexico residents are working on a movie coming to Netflix in the future.

The feature film, “Chupa,” focuses on a teenager played by Evan Whitten, who discovers a mythical creature - a baby Chupacabra hiding in the shed at his grandfather’s ranch, according to the film’s IMDB listing. After the discovery, Whitten’s character, along with his cousins, take off on an adventure to save that baby Chupacabra.

Oscar nominee Demian Bichir, Julio Cesar Cedillo, Nickolas Verdugo and Ashley Ciarra have also been cast in the movie.

Marcus Rinehart, Sean Kennedy Moore, and Joe Barnathan wrote the original screenplay for “Chupa,” and director Jonás Cuarón assisted with rewrites. Filming is expected to continue through October in several locations throughout the state.

“'Chupa' is employing over 900 New Mexicans over the next three months, which continues our strong and ongoing relationship with Netflix,” said Amber Dodson, New Mexico film office director. This breaks down to 650 as background and extras, and 300 working as crew members on the sets.

The film is being produced by 26th Street Pictures Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe. G. Mac Brown and Brendan Bellomo are executive producers.
