Federal government workers are advised to get ready for the possibility of a government shutdown if they intend to apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits

The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) has advised federal employees in New Mexico who may face furlough during a temporary federal government shutdown to prepare for the possibility of applying for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits. In a press release, NMDWS urged these federal employees to gather the necessary documentation and information ahead of time.


National defense labs collaborate on Scorpius

Sandia, Los Alamos, and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories, in partnership with the Nevada National Security Site, are collaborating on the development of Scorpius, a massive machine designed to capture images of plutonium as it undergoes compression using high explosives. The machine, which is being constructed a thousand feet below ground and spans the length of a football field, aims to replicate the conditions just prior to a nuclear explosion, providing valuable insights for national defense research.

Albuquerque City Councilors approve urging legislative action for public safety and behavioral health, and affirm constitutional right to keep and bear arms

The City of Albuquerque announced that Councilors approved two bills, R-23-170 and R-23-171. Both pieces of legislation were introduced by City Councilors Dan Lewis, Brook Bassan, Louie Sanchez, and Renée Grout according to the press release. The bills now go to the Mayor for signature.

Local students graduate from Los Alamos waste operator boot camp

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management has announced that twelve operators in nuclear waste processing have successfully completed a 16-week Nuclear Waste Processing Operator (NWPO) Boot Camp and obtained their certifications as nuclear waste processors or handlers. The program was provided by Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B), a legacy cleanup contractor for EM Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA), in collaboration with the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA).


Judge Enjoins APD From Enforcing Laws Against Homeless To Remove Them From Public Spaces

On Sept. 21, District Court Judge Josh Allison issued a Preliminary Injunction against the City of Albuquerque from “enforcing or threatening to enforce” statutes and city ordinance to displace the homeless from public spaces. The Court enjoined the city from seizing and destroying homeless belongings and mandates a warrant and post deprivation hearings regarding personal belongings seized.

Appointment of New Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs at UNM College of Nursing
